Elk Mound, Wisconsin veteran John Kaanta put a cap on a great weekend as he raced to the win in the WISSOTA Late Model feature on Sunday night. The win was worth $3000 and was the third night of the Northern Metal Recycling Summer Series. In other action, Tim Johnson raced to the win on night three of the Diamond Buick GMC Modified Challenge Series. Johnson backed up that win with wins in both the WISSOTA Super Stocks and WISSSOTA Street Stocks, giving him three wins on the evening. Other drivers who parked their rides in Marthaler Chevrolet included Corey Storck in the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds and Jesse Waldorf in the Pure Stocks.

Twenty Five WISSOTA Late Models rumbled onto the speedway for their thirty lap main event. As the cars began to enter the speedway, a light rain began to fall on the high flying half mile speedway. Officials made the determination to pull the cars off the speedway and track officials took to the track in order to run in the moisture. After the delay, Don Shaw and John Kaanta manned row one for the main event. Shaw, who won Saturday’s feature, jumped to the early lead while Kaanta settled into the second spot. With Shaw blistering the track up front, Kaanta came under heavy siege from Aberdeen, SD visitor Kent Arment. As the leaders began to enter lap traffic Shaw continued to navigate his way through, while Kaanta and Arment began to gain ground. Behind the lead trio, the main battle on the speedway was between Brad Seng, Donny Schatz, and Zach Johnson as the laps continued to tick down. A caution would fly over the speedway near the midpoint of the track for Jeff Massingill, who slipped over the banking in turn two. Shaw paced Arment and Kaanta to the green and jumped back to the lead. With only two more laps completed, Arment shot to the inside of the track and made contact with Shaw’s machine. Arment retired pit side after being charged with the yellow, while Shaw retired pitside with a flat tire. This put Kaanta on the point with Schatz and Johnson on his back bumper for the ensuing restart. With the green back out, Kaanta continued to work the lowside of the speedway in route to the win. Schatz was second, Johnson third, Pat Doar fourth, and Seng rounded out the top five.

Kent Arment and Jake Wildman sat on row one for the twenty five lap Diamond Buick GMC Modified feature. With the green flag out, Wildman planted his machine on the high side of the track and raced to lead on lap one. Before a single lap could be completed the yellow would fly over the speedway for a multi car incident on the back chute. With the field lined back up, Arment jumped to the lead, with Tim Johnson in tow. Only a couple of laps into the race, Johnson was able to race past Arment into the lead, who was now under pressure from Brady Gerdes and Zach Johnson who had marched forward from this tenth starting spot. Near the midway point of the race a caution would fly which put Zach and Gerdes on Tim’s back bumper. Zach was able to clear Gerdes for the second spot and set his sights on Tim for the lead. Lap after lap Zach worked to the inside and was finally able to complete the pass. As the laps continued to tick down, it looked as if Johnson had things well in hand, until he dropped a driveshaft on the front chute with two laps left, ending his night. This gave the lead back to Tim and he raced to the win with Gerdes second, Jason Thoennes third, Arment fourth, and Brian Haben was fifth.

Travis Vanderby and Cody Overton set the pace for the sixteen car WISSOTA Super Stock feature event. Overton raced out to a slight advantage while Trevor Saurer and Cory Tammen raced hard for the second spot. Meanwhile, behind the leaders, Tim Johnson and Dave Mass were on their way to the front. Johnson was able to use the low groove and raced into the lead with Mass and Saurer battling for second. Mass eventually moved into the number two spot. With the top two out front and Saurer in third, Tammen in fourth, the main battle on the track was for the number five spot between Jeff Crouse and Overton. As the laps continued to tick down, Johnson continued to maintain his lead as he raced to the win ahead of Mass, Saurer, Tammen, and Overton.

Jamestown, ND visitor Billie Christ and Bryan Crandall paced the sixteen car WISSOTA Street Stock feature to the green. With the green flag out, second row starter, Andrew Bangsund jumped to the early lead while a multi car battle ensued behind him. Bangsund continued to pace the field when Tim Johnson snuck into the second spot with ten laps remaining on the scoreboard. Johnson began to cut into Bangsund’s lead lap after lap. Near the halfway point of the race, Johnson moved to the low side of the speedway and completed the pass on Bangsund for the lead. With the top two running nose to tail, Ryan Satter, Justin Vogel, and Justin Tammen battled hard for the third spot. Back up front it was all Johnson as he raced to the win. Bangsund was second, Satter third, Tammen fourth and Vogel was fifth.

Montrose, SD drivers Lyndon and Tyler Johnson paced the twenty five car WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature to the green. An early race caution would fly over the speedway for Tyler Johnson and Jamie Thorstad who ended up in the front stretch wall. With the field reset, Ron Saurer jumped into the lead with action happening all over the speedway. Saurer was then joined by Corey Storck as he began to search for a way around Saurer. Storck was able to complete the pass with only a handful of laps remaining on the board. Meanwhile, back in traffic, row eight starters, Shawn Olson and Haley Lee were the drivers to watch. The duo worked their way to the front and began to reel in Saurer with only a couple of laps left. Back up front it was all Storck as he raced to the win. Saurer was second, Lee was third, Olson fourth, and Lyndon Johnson rounded out the top five.

A nice field of eleven Pure Stocks came to the speedway for their feature event. Brock Volker jumped to the early lead, while Carson Miller ran hard in second. As the laps began to tick down, Jesse Waldorf moved to the high side of the speedway and was able to complete a last lap pass for the win.

Viking Speedway will be back in action next Saturday, June 3rd when it plays host to a regular race show with all six classes in action. The show will also feature a monster truck exhibition at intermission. For more information on the track please visit them online at www.vikingspeedway.net or like the track on Facebook.
