Brainerd’s Tim Johnson is no stranger to Marthaler Chevrolet Victory Lane and on Saturday Johnson added to more wins to his season total, as he dominated the WISSOTA Street Stock and Super Stocks. Other drivers who found their way into victory lane on AFCO Race of Champions night included, Zach Johnson in the WISSOTA Late Models, Josh Thoennes in the WISSOTA Modifieds, Cody Lee in the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds, and Jesse Waldorf in the Pure Stocks. The night’s action was sponsored by Mark Lee Excavating, Mark Lee Asphalt, and Hilltop Lumber.

Eleven Greeley Plumbing and Heating WISSOTA Late Models rumbled to the speedway for their twenty lap main event. Chris Winter and Corey Nelson led the pack to the green and Nelson wasted no time in jumping to the outside groove and raced to the lead. With Nelson in firm control up front, seventh starting Zach Johnson began his march to the front. Only a handful of laps into the event, Johnson raced into the second spot and set his sights on Nelson for the lead. The first caution of the event fly over the speedway for Greg Meyer who drove off the banking in turn two. With the field lined back up Nelson led Johnson and Ryan Mikkelson, who was making his first visit to the speedway this season, to the green. Johnson blasted to the lowside of the track and grabbed the lead with Nelson and Mikkelson battling for the second spot. As the laps continued to tick down, Johnson continued to hold a comfortable margin and he raced to the win. Nelson was second, Mikkelson third, Casey Meyer fourth, and Shawn Meyer rounded out the top five.

Sixteen Sower Power WISSOTA Modified came trackside for their twenty lap main event with Josh Thoennes and Blake Jegtvig manning the front row. Head flagman, Mike Blom dropped the green and Thoennes jumped to the early lead with Jegtvig settling into the second spot. An early race caution would fly over the high banked half mile speedway for debris from Jason Thoennes’s machine. Jason would head to the pit area and made repairs in order to get back into the race. Josh lead Jegtvig and Tim Johnson to the green and once again Thoennes jumped out to a nice advantage while Johnson battled with Danny Bayer. With the laps continued to tick off the Shaw Trucking scoreboard, the top three remained the same. Thoennes raced to the checkered first with Jegtvig in second, Johnson third, Bayer fourth, and Travis Saurer rounded out the top five.

Eleven Greeley Plumbing and Heating WISSOTA Super Stocks came to the track for their feature event. The feature was paced to the field by powerhouses Jeff Crouse and Tim Johnson. Johnson, who has been almost unbeatable in the Super Stocks at Viking, jumped to the cushion into the early lead while Crouse settled into the number two spot, ahead of Matt Miller in third. With the top three using the high side of the speedway, Cory Tammen began to work the low side of the track in order to gain on the top three. Tammen worked the bottom until he would bring out the caution for a spin out, bunching the field up once more. Johnson led Crouse and Miller to the green once again and Crouse looked to the low side of the track in an effort to derail Johnson, but Johnson powered back by on the outside. A series of cautions continued to plauge the race, with Johnson holding the lead each time. The final caution would blink over the speedway with two laps remaining, giving Crouse one more shot at Johnson. Crouse dove to the bottom of the track, only to have his car suffer a mechanical issue, ending his evening. From there Johnson held on for the win with Jon Stepan in second, Trevor Saurer in third, Tammen raced his way back to fourth, and Jon Crouse rounded out the top five.

Bryan Crandall and Tim Johnson manned row one for the twelve lap, Wayne’s Auto Repair WISSOTA Street Stock feature event. At the drop of the green, Johnson jumped into the early lead with Crandall locked in a battle with Mark Blom, Justin Vogel, and Justin Tammen for the second and third spots. Two laps into the race, Vogel was able to clear the group as he raced into the second spot. The lone caution of the event would fly over the track with eight laps remaining, when Tammen lost the bite on his machine and spun in turn four. On the restart, Johnson once again flexed his muscle and raced off to a nice lead with Blom battled with Vogel for the second spot. Back up front it was all Johnson as he cruised to the win with Vogel in second, Blom third, Brett Mller fourth, and Andrew Bangsund fifth.

Corey Storck and Matt Thoennes manned row one for the fifteen lap, Villard Implement WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature event. Thoennes worked to the early lead while Storck was left to battle with Cody Lee and Nick Bruder for the number two spot. Thoennes continued to hold the field at bay, but Lee and Storck were closing quickly, with both searching for the fastest line around the speedway. Near the midway point of the race, Storck raced to the inside of Thoennes into the lead, only to see Lee go rocketing by on the outside into the lead. A series of cautions would go on to plague the main event, with Lee continuing to lead on each one of the restarts. With Lee up front, Bruder soon jumped into the fray as he battled back and forth with Storck for the second spot, but back front it was all Lee as he raced to his first Viking Speedway win of the season. Storck was second, Bruder third, thirteenth starting Randy Laage was fourth, and Thoennes rounded out the top five.

In non WISSOTA support action, Jesse Waldorf raced to his third Cenex of Alexandria Pure Stock feature win. Waldorf who started fifth raced his way to the front and held off Tanner Horn, Craig Gardner, Dustin Karl, and Brock Volker for the win.

The high flyin half mile will be back in action this coming Saturday, June 10th, with a regular race program on tap. The Fast Shafts Limited Late Models will also be making their first apperance of the season at the speedway. The racing action gets under way at 6:45, with grandstands opening at 5:00. for more information on the speedway please visit them online at www.vikingspeedway.net or “like” the track on Facebook.
