11 June 2017,

Zach Johnson made the high side stick and raced to the WISSOTA Modified feature win on a hot, sunny, and windy Saturday evening at Viking Speedway. Other drivers who found their way into victory lane included, Don Shaw in the WISSOTA Late Models, Jeff Crouse in the WISSOTA Super Stocks, Tim Johnson in the WISSOTA Street Stocks, Blake Boelens in the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds, Ben Wolden in the Fastshafts Limited Late Models, and Brock Volker in the Pure Stocks. The nights action was sponsored by Ellingson Plumbing & Heating, Racestar Motorsports, and Minnewaska Abstract & Title.

Shawn Meyer and Greg Meyer paced the Greeley Plumbing WISSOTA Late Model feature to the green. Shawn began to work the bottom of the speedway, while Greg worked to the outside of the track. Over the course of the first handful of laps the duo raced side by side around the speedway with Don Shaw lurking in the third spot. Five laps into the event, Shaw looked to split the Meyer pair as the trio raced off of turn four, and as the cars entered turn one, Greg slipped over the banking bringing out the yellow flag. This put Shaw on the point with Zach Johnson and Shawn Meyer on his rear bumper. Before a lap could be completed the yellow would blink back over the speedway for Rick Nelson, who spun to a stop on the front chute. With the green back out Shaw jumped to the top side of the track and raced to a comfortable lead with Johnson in second. With the top two comfortably running the top side, Shawn came under siege from Ryan Mikkelson for the third spot. Back up front it was all Shaw as he raced to the win, Johnson was second, S. Meyer third, Mikkelson fourth, and Cole Schill rounded out the top five.

Mike Storck and Dusty Bitzan manned the front row for the Sower Power WISSOTA Modified feature event. Storck blasted to the lead as the leaders entered turn one on the first lap, only to slide over the top of the track allowing the field to race by. This handed the lead to Bitzan with Tim Johnson locking himself into the second spot. While the leaders worked the bottom side of the track, Zach Johnson jumped to the outside groove of the track and began to reel in the leaders. Lap after lap Zach continued to get closer and closer to Tim, completing the pass near the midway point of the race. From there Z. Johnson began his quest to overtake Bitzan for the lead. Only a handful of laps later, Bitzan moved to the high groove, in an effort to keep the lead. Johnson then blasted to the bottom of the track and completed the pass as the leaders exited turn two. As the laps continued to tick down, Johnson built up a commanding lead and raced to the win with Bitzan in second, T. Johnson third, Blake Jegtvig fourth, and Jason Thoennes rounding out the top five.

Local pilots Jeff Crouse and Jason Cook manned row one for the Greeley Plumbing WISSOTA Super Stock feature. Crouse, who was searching for his first win on the season, jumped to the outside groove and raced to the lead with a mob scene behind him. Crouse continued to blister the highside of the track, while Tim Johnson, Trevor Saurer, Cory Tammen, and Cook all battled door to door behind him. Saurer was able to work his way into the second spot, while Johnson searched for a line to gain on the leaders. The caution would fly over the speedway with two laps remaining when Tammen spun in turn two. This gave Saurer and Johnson one more shot at Crouse and with the green back out, Crouse once again flexed his muscle as he raced to the win. Saurer was second, Johnson third, Jon Stepan fourth, and Cook rounded out the top five.

Jordan Fisher and Gary Reents sat on the front row for the Wayne’s Auto Repair
WISSOTA Steet Stock feature event. With the green flag out, third starting Bryan Crandall wasted no time jumping into the lead. Crandall came across the line to lead lap one, while eighth starting, Tim Johnson had already raced his way into the second spot. Crandall continued to work the low side of the track with Johnson blasting around the top side in an effort to reel in Crandall. Only a handful of laps into the event, Johnson raced by Crandall into the lead and Crandall came under heavy siege from Justin Tammen and Ryan Satter as the trio raced for the second spot. Lap after lap Crandall was able to fight the duo off, but up front Johnson cruised to the win with Crandall second, Tammen third, Satter fourth, and Justin Vogel rounded out the top five.

Blake Boelens and Jason Hoffman manned row one for the sixteen car Villard Implement WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature event. With the green flag out, Boelens wasted no time jumping into the lead while Jon Stepan, Hoffman, Ron Saurer, and Jamie Thorstad battled for the second spot. Boelens continued to blister the track as the laps continued to tick down with Thorstad running in the number two spot. Boelens would go on to win his first feature of the season with Stepan second, Hoffman third, Saurer fourth, and Justin Froemming rounding out the top five.

Ben Wolden raced from his second row starting spot enroute to the win in the Fastshafts Midwest Limited Late Model feature event. Wolden overtook race long leader, Cody Overton, near the midway point of the race and dominated in the class, which was making it’s first of four visits to the speedway this season. Dave Zimmerman was second, Rick Schroeder third, Overton fourth, and Chris Winter rounded out the top five.

In other non-WISSOTA support action, Brock Volker picked up his first career win in the Cenex of Alexandria Pure Stocks. Volker held off multi time winner Jesse Waldorf in the early stages of the race and raced side by side with Craig Gardner to the flag to claim the win. Gardner was second, Megan Arvidson third, Carson Miller fourth, and Waldorf rounded out the top five.

The high flying half mile will be back in action, next Saturday, June 17th when it plays host to the annual Florian Sprinzel Street Stock Special. All other regular classes will be in action with the green flying at 6:45 and grandstands opening at 5:00.
