25 June 2017,

A nice field of 92 cars checked in to do battle at Viking Speedway on a cool, cloudy, windy evening. When the dust settled, Don Shaw used a late race pass on race long leader Casey Meyer in route to the win in the WISSOTA Late models. Other drivers who visited Marthaler Chevrolet Victory Lane included, Zach Johnson in the WISSOTA Modifieds, Jeff Crouse in the WISSOTA Super Stocks, Tim Johnson in the WISSOTA Street Stocks, Blake Boelens in the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds, Cody Overton in the Limited Late Models, and Jesse Waldorf in the Pure Stocks.

The night’s WISSOTA Polydome Dirt Track Series action was sponsored by Midwest Machinery. The night’s action was also dedicated to the late Mike Commerford as the speedway played host to the 5th annual Mike Commerford Memorial race.

Scott Lehn and Casey Meyer paced the eleven car Greeley Plumbing and Heating WISSOTA Late Model feature to the green. Meyer quickly jumped to the high side of the speewday with cousin Shawn Meyer rolling into the second spot. Behind the leaders, Greg Meyer and Don Shaw began to do battle for the third spot, and only a couple of laps into the event, Shaw made a pass and quickly raced up to challenge Shawn for the second spot. With Casey still at the point, Shaw dove to the inside of Shawn and was able to complete the pass only a handful of laps later. Lap after lap Shaw continued to cut into Casey’s lead and with only a few laps remaining, Shaw dove to the bottom of the track in turn one, only to see Casey power back on the outside. With only two laps remaining Shaw went to the outside of Casey and completed the pass, and from there he went on to claim the win. Casey was second, Shawn third, Greg fourth, and Zach Johnson rounded out the top five after starting in the number eight spot.

Local products, Brett Hoium and Chris Mensen set the pace for the eighteen car Sower Power WISSOTA Modified feature. Hoium jumped to the early lead and led the hungry field of cars across the stripe for lap one, with second row starters, Zach Johnson, and Dusty Bitzan in hot pursuit. Johnson was able to race past Hoium into the lead brining Bitzan with him. With Johnson leading Bitzan began to search for a groove in order to get by him and eventually was able to only a few laps into the race. With Bitzan in the lead, Johnson began to work all different lines around the half mile speedway in order to find a way around Bitzan. Behind the lead duo, Dan Ebert and Landon Atkinson began to move their way to the front, with Ebert moving into the third spot after passing Atkinson near the midway point of the race. Back up front Johnson continued to dig for any traction in order to get around Bitzan, who continued to run a flawless race in search of his first win in 2017. With two laps remaining, the leaders began to enter a group of lap traffic forcing each driver to pick a different lane in order to navigate through the lapped cars. Bitzan came across the Midwest Machinery starting line first to take the white flag with Johnson hot on his heels. As the leaders entered turn three on the final lap, Johnson was able to make the pass stick to claim the win, Bitzan settled for second, Ebert third, Atkinson fourth, and Hoium rounded out the top five.

Eleven of the tweleve scheduled starters in the Greeley Plumbing WISSOTA Super Stocks rumbled to the track, with Bryan Hellerman and Jason Cooking sitting on the front row. Before the race could get under way, track crew were dispatched to turn two for Travis Vanderby, who broke a suspension part, ending his evening. With Vanderby off the speedway, head flagman, Mike Blom, brought the field to life and Jeff Crouse and Tim Johnson went to work. Crouse was able to use the super low side of the speedway to race to the lead from his fifth starting spot on lap one, with Johnson racing from eighth to second. Crouse began to open up a nice cushion the second place running Johnson as the laps began to tick down on the Shaw Trucking scoreboad. With the leaders racing hard out front, and Trevor Saurer in the third spot, all eyes were on number tweleve starter Jon Stepan who raced his way into the top five and locked horns with Matt Miller for the fourth spot. Back up front Crouse continued to blister the low side, while Johnson looked for a way to gain ground on to no avail, as Crouse raced to his second straight win at Viking. Johnson was second, Saurer third, Stepan fourth, and Miller was fifth.

Veteran drivers Gary Reents and Brett Miller paced eleven Wayne’s Auto WISSOTA Street Stocks to the green for their fifteen lap main event. Miller jumped out to the early lead with Ryan Satter and Tim Johnson quickly working their way to the front. Miller continued to lead while Satter snuck into the second spot and began to put heavy pressure on Miller. As the cars entered turn one on lap four, the duo made contact sending Miller over the banking in turn one, causing him to roll over. Miller was checked out by on site EMT’s and was uninjured in the incident. With the incident cleaned up and Satter tagging the end of the field, Johnson led the field back to the green. Johnson quickly began to pull away from the field in route to the win. Satter raced back to second, Bryan Crandall was third, Andrew Bangsund fourth, and Make Blom rounded out the top five.

Brandon Dolman and Jason Hoffman sat on the front row for the Villard Implement WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature event. Hoffman, who looked very strong in a heat race earlier in the night, blasted out to the lead, with Dolman locked in a battle with Blake Boelens and McKenzie Gerdes for the second spot. After a couple of yellow flag periods, Hoffman once again led the field to the green and Boelens was able to race into the second spot. Boelens then began his assault on Hoffman for the lead and was able to complete the pass just a few laps later, leaving Hoffman in a heated battle with Shawn Olson for the second spot. Olson, who started sixth, raced past Hoffman on the low side of the track and began to track down Boelens with only a handful of laps remaining. With the white flag in the air, Olson raced up to Boelens back bumper, only to see him pull away once more. Boelens went on to win his second feature in a row at Viking, with Olson second, Hoffman third, Randy Laage charged from tenth to fourth, and Dolman was fifth.

After a wild and crazy start to their feature, which left many cars with sheet metal damage, the Fastshafts Limited Late Model feature got underway with Jeff Flaten and Scott Lehn sitting on the front row. Flaten was able to get an early lead, but was quickly overtaken by seventh starter Cody Overton. Overton then went on to hold off Ben Wolden for his first win in the class. Flaten was third, Rick Schroeder fourth, and Ryan Satter was fifth.

Like always, the Cenex of Alexandria Pure Stocks put on quite the show for the fans. In the end, Jesse Waldorf raced to the front from his seventh starting spot to capture his fourth win of the season. Tanner Horn was second, Carson Miller third, Megan Arvidson fourth, and Tyler Kunz rounded out the top five.

The high flying half mile speedway will be back in action next Saturday, July 1st, as the play host to their second annual Viking Late Model Special, paying $2000 to the winner. For more information the track, please visit their website at www.vikingspeedway.net or “like” the track on Facebook.
