Shawn Meyer, one third of the Meyer’s racing team from Wahpeton, ND, held off his uncle Greg in route to his first Viking Speedway win on Saturday night. Meyer’s WISSOTA Late Model win was part of the Polydome Dirt Track Series action. Other drivers who found their way into Marthalers Chevrolet victory lane included, Phil Braun in the WISSOTA Modifieds, Tim Johnson in the WISSOTA Street Stocks and Super Stocks, Ron Saurer in the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds, Travis Saurer in the Fast Shafts Limited Late Models, and Brock Volker in the Pure Stocks. The night’s racing action was sponsored by Bell Bank and Auto Value.

Scott Lehn and Shawn Meyer led a hungry field of ten Greeley Plumbing WISSOTA Late Models to the green. At the drop of the green, Lehn began to slide back into the field, while S. Meyer jumped to the early lead. Shawn’s uncle, Greg, quickly raced into the second spot, while his cousin, Casey, sat in the third spot. The yellow would fly over the speedway on lap two, for Don Shaw, who clipped a tire in the bottom of the turn three. Shaw would be forced to retire pitside with front end damage. Shawn once again jumped to the lead with Greg in the number two spot and Casey in third. Behind the Meyer crew, Zach Johnson, Dustin Bluhm, and Ryan Mikkelson were locked in a nice three car battle for the fourth-sixth spots, with Johnson eventually moving into fourth. As the laps continued to tick down, Shawn continued to stretch his lead and raced to his first Viking Speedway win of the season, Greg Meyer was second, Johnson third, Casey Meyer fourth, and Mikkelson rounded out the top five.

Danube, MN driver Phil Braun and Glenwood’s Jake Wildman manned the front row for the Sower Power WISSOTA Modified feature event. At the drop of the green, Braun worked to the top side of the speedway with Wildman battling with Josh Thoennes for the second spot. An early race caution would come out for an incident involving Tim Johnson, who retired to the pits with damage to his machine. Braun once again worked to the high side of the track, into the lead, while Thoennes, Wildman, and Blake Jegtvig battled for the number two spot. Thoennes and Jegtvig were able to work their way past Wildman and set their sights on Braun, who continued to blister the track. Meanwhile, back in traffic, Brady Gerdes continued to march towards the front. Gerdes, who had tough luck at I-94 Speedway on Friday, and broke in a heat race, found the low side of the track to his liking and raced into the top five with only a handful of laps remaining. As the laps continued to tick down, Braun’s gap continued to shrink, but he would hold on for the win, his first win at Viking this season. Thoennes was second, Jegtvig third, Gerdes worked up to fourth, and Zach Johnson rounded out the top five.

Local drivers, Matt Miller and Jon Stepan paced the nine car Greeley Plumbing WISSOTA Super Stock feature to the green. Stepan jumped into the early lead, but was under heavy pressure from second row starter, Jeff Crouse before the field could complete a lap. The duo was quickly joined by track point leader, Tim Johnson, and a nice three car battle ensued for the lead. On the third lap, Johnson and Stepan made contact, while racing for the lead. Track officials determined that Johnson was at fault for the incident, sending him to the tail of the field for the restart. With the green back out, Crouse raced into the lead, and began to stretch out his advantage over the field. With Crouse out front, all eyes were on Johnson, as he began to work his way back to the front. Only two laps after the restart, Johnson sat third and quickly raced his way into the second spot and set his sights on Crouse for the lead. Lap after lap, Johnson continued to close the gap. With only a handful of laps left, Johnson raced up to Crouse’s back bumper, as Crouse began to suffer mechanical issues and his machine continued to slow. Johnson was able to complete the pass and raced to the win with Crouse holding on for second, Trevor Saurer third, Stepan fourth, and Miller fifth.

David Deters and Eric Riley paced the Wayne’s Auto Repair WISSOTA Street Stock feature to the green. As the drivers came around to complete lap one, a nice battle for the lead was shaping up with Justin Vogel and Andrew Bangsund locked in a battle for the lead. Five laps into the main event, Tim Johnson raced up to join the battle for the lead. Only a couple of laps later, Johnson was able to race into the lead, while Vogel’s machine slowed and he retired to the pits. With Johnson up front, the main battle on the track was between Riley and Ryan Satter for the third spot. Back up front it was all Johnson as he raced to his 10th Street Stock win of the season at Viking. Bangsund was second, Riley third, Satter fourth, and Bryan Crandall rounded out the top five.

A pair of “2’s”, Brock Gronwold and Brooke Hellerman sat on row one for the nineteen car, Villard Implement WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature event. Head flagman, Mike Blom, brought the field to life, and Ron Saurer worked his way around the duo into the lead. Saurer, who is a forty plus year veteran of racing in the area, planted his machine on the cushion and began to stretch his lead, with Matt Thoennes sitting in the second spot. Behind the lead duo, Jason Hoffman and Travis Saurer, began to work their way towards the front. The duo raced into the third and fourth spots near the midway point of the race and set their sights on Thoennes and R. Saurer. Back up front it was all Saurer as he raced to the win, Thoennes was second, Hoffman third, T. Saurer fourth, and Gronwold rounded out the top five.

Travis Saurer notched his first win in the Fast Shafts Midwest Limited Late Models. Saurer, who tracked down racelong leader Jeff Flaten, used a late race caution in order to get the lead. Saurer then held off Flaten and a hard charging Ben Wolden in route to parking his Johanneck Investments machine in victory lane. Flaten was second, Wolden third, Joe Pellman fourth, and Scott Lehn rounded out the top five.

Brock Volker held off a late race charge from Tyler Kunz in order to claim the Cenex of Alexandria Pure Stock feature win. Volker, who started on the outside of row one, lead all eight laps en route to his second win at Viking this season. Kunz was second, Craig Gardner third, Carson Miller fourth, and Tanner Horn rounded out the top five.

The high banked half mile speedway will be back in action next Saturday night, July 22nd, with all six regular classes, plus Limited Late Models in action. Fans should also mark their calendars for July 29th, when the track will play host to it’s Jam the Stands night.
