Current track point leader, Shawn Olson, sliced and diced his way to the front, after starting in the number nine spot, to claim the WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature on a beautiful Saturday night at Viking Speedway. Olson’s win was part of the Polydome Dirt Track Series, and came in front of a packed grandstands on Jam the Stands night. Other drivers who navigated there way to Marthaler Chevrolet Victory Lane included, Greg Meyer in the WISSOTA Late Models, Jeremy Nelson in the WISSOTA Modifieds, Tim Johnson in the WISSOTA Super Stocks, Justin Pogones in the WISSOTA Street Stocks, and Craig Gardner in the Pure Stocks. The night’s racing, which featured free grandstand admission, was sponsored by Douglas, Pope, Todd, and Stearns county corn growers, Denco II, and CVAC.

Chris Winter and Greg Meyer manned the front row for the eleven car Greeley Plumbing & Heating WISSOTA Late Model feature event. Greg wasted no time jumping to the low side of the track and raced into the lead, with nephew, Shawn, moving into the second spot. With the Meyers in firm control of the top two spots, Don Shaw began his march to the front and moved into the third spot, with current track point leader, Zach Johnson in tow. The lone yellow of the event would fly with only a few laps remaining, when Scott Lehn spun and came to a stop in turn three. With the green back out, G. Meyer went back to the low groove and raced to the win. Shawn was second, Shaw third, Johnson fourth, and Rick Nelson rounded out the top five.

Fifteen of the seventeen scheduled starters rumbled to the track for the Sowere Power WISSOTA Modified feature event. Jeremy Nelson and Jason Blascyk paced the field to the green and Nelson took off like a shot out of a cannon. Nelson raced to the low groove and hooked his machine up as he blasted down the back chute on lap one. With Nelson in the lead, Dustin Bitzan worked his way into the second spot, and began to set his sights on Nelson. Nelson continued to lead while Bitzan was locked in a nice battle with Dan Ebert for the second spot. As the laps continued to tick down, Nelson continued to stretch his lead as he raced to the win, his first at Viking. Bitzan held on for second, Ebert third, Andy Jones fourth, and Landon Atkinson was fifth.

Local driver, Chris Lynch and vistor, Kurt Becken paced the ten car Greeley Plumbing & Heating WISSOTA Super Stock feature to the green. As the pack entered turn one on the first lap, Jeff Crouse, Tim Johnson, and Trevor Saurer all looked to get to the front first. A caution would fly over the speedway before the first lap could be completed for an incident in turn three, which sent Johnson to the tail of the field. With the line up set, flagman Mike Blom, brought the field back to life and Crouse raced up to the lead, with Johnson in hot pursuit. Johnson would complete the pass before the first lap was over and began to build a big lead. Lap after lap, Johnson blistered the speedway, as he cotinued to build his lead over Crouse and Saurer. Johnson cruised to the win, Crouse was second, Saurer third, Becken fourth, and Roger Host rolled across the line in fifth.

Young drivers, Tyler Erdman and Travis Scott led the ten car Wayne’s Auto Repair WISSOTA Street Stock feature to the green. With the green flag out, third starter Bryan Crandall pointed his machine towards the front and bolted to the lead, with great racing action behind him. As Crandall continued to lead, Tim Johnson, Justin Pogones, Justin Vogel, and Jeff Crouse were locked in a great battle. Near the midway point of the race, Pogones found the low side of the speedway to his liking and he raced up to challenge Crandall. Pogones was able to make the pass, with Vogel in tow, as the trio raced down the back chute. With only three laps remaining, Johnson looked to the low side of Vogel and raced into the second spot, and set his sights on Pogones. With the white flag out, Johnson raced up to Pogones’s back bumper, but to no avail as Pogones held him off for the win. The win, Pogones’s first at Viking Speedway, ended an eleven race win streak for Johnson, who came home second. Vogel was third, Crandall fourth, and Crouse rounded out the top five after going to the rear after a mid race spin.

Abby Gierke and Jamie Thorstad paced the sixteen car Villard Implement WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature to the green. Thorstad, who was debuting a brand new race car, jumped up to the top side of the track and raced out to the early lead, with Blake Boelens hot on his heels. With the top two working the high side, the drive on the move was Shawn Olson. Olson who started in the number nine spot, began to pick off car after car on the low side of the track. Olson raced into the third spot, and the caution would come out over the speedway. With seven laps remaining, Thorstad led Olson and Boelens to the green and Olson powered to the lowside of the track, with Thorstad up high. As the duo exited turn two and headed down the back chute, Olson pulled ahead into the lead. Meanwhile back in traffic, the driver on the move now was McKenzie Gerdes. Gerdes who started eleventh, worked her way up into the top five with only a few laps left. Back up front, Olson raced to the win, Thorstad second, Boelens third, Gerdes fourth, and Corey Storck was fifth.

Craig Gardner survived the carnage that was the Cenex of Alexandria Pure Stock feature event. The race, which featured multiple wrecks, and a very hard rollover by Chad Andersen, also featured some good racing. Gardner held off Tyler Kunz for the win, Carson Miller was third, Megan Arvidson fourth, and Richard Hasse fifth.

Next weekend the high flying half mile speedway will hold it’s annual Hall of Fame night, along with the Kluver Super Stock Memorial. The Vintage cars will also be on hand, making it an action packed night. For more information on the speedway please visit them online at www.vikingspeedway.net or “like” the track on Facebook.
