For the second straight week, the WISSOTA Midwest Modifed feature stole the show at Viking Speedway. Josh Muzik, Ron Saurer, and Corey Storck kept the fans at the edge of their seats, with a great battle from the drop of the green. In the end, Muzik was able to beat Saurer by mere inches to claim his first win of the 2017 season. Other drivers who found their way into Marthaler’s Chevrolet Victory Lane included, Zach Johnson in the WISSOTA Late Models, Matt Gilbertson in the WISSOTA Modifieds, and Tim Johnson in the WISSOTA Street Stocks and Super Stocks. In non WISSOTA support action, Tanner Horn claimed his first career win.

The night was a special one at the speedway as two more members were elected into the Viking Speedway Hall of Fame. Dave Thoennes and Dave Zimmerman were inducted as the class of 2017, with the night’s action being sponsored by Winning Edge Graphics and Alex Pro Firearms.

Scott Lehn and Rick Nelson lead a small Greeley Plumbing & Heating WISSOTA Late Model feature to the green. With the green out, fifth starting Zach Johnson began to move his way to the front. Johnson was able to get out to the lead early in the event and raced to the win ahead of Casey Meyer in second, Greg Meyer third, Nelson fourth, and Lehn fifth.

Chris Mensen and Tim Johnson manned the front row for the Sower Power WISSOTA Modified feature event. Before the drop of the green, third starting Jake Wildman pulled to the pits with an issue, ending his evening. With the line up reset, Johnson blasted into the lead and continued to lead during the early laps of the feature, as he blasted around the top side of the track. With Johnson on top, eighth starting Brady Gerdes was working the low side of the speedway and raced up to challenge Johnson, who was fighting a broked left front tie rod. Gerdes raced to the lead, with Matt Gilbertson joining the fray on the top side of the track. With only a handful of laps left, Gilbertson blasted his machine hard into turn one and made the pass of Gerdes as the leaders shot down the back chute. From there, Gilbertson held of for the win, his first at Viking in 2017, Gerdes was secon, Jason Thoennes third, Johnson fourth, and Josh Thoennes rounded out the top five.

Fourteen Greeley Plumbing & Heating WISSOTA Super Stocks rumbled onto the track for their twenty lap feature event. The feature was the annual Kluver Memorial Special, with Eric Martini and Jason Cook on row one. At the drop of the green, third starter, Tim Johnson moved to the low side of the track and worked his way into the lead, with Martini in tow. With Johnson blistering the bottom of the track, and Martini comfortably in the second spot, the main battle on the track was between Jeff Crouse, Cory Tammen, and Jason Cook for the third spot. Crouse was able to move into the third spot and set off in an effort to reel in the two leaders. Back up front, Johnson cruised to the win, Martini came home second, Crouse third, Tammen fourth, and Cook finished in fifth. Johnson’s engine was protested after the event, making the results of this race unofficial pending the results.

Scott Horn and Gary Reents paced a nice twelve car Wayne’s Auto Repair WISSOTA Street Stock feature to the green. Mark Blom jumped into the early lead with Tim Johnson, Tyler Erdman, and Jeff Crouse working their way into the mix. An early race caution would fly for an incident that ended Horn’s night and caused damage to many other competitors. With track clean up complete, Johnson wasted no time getting to the lead and set off, in search of yet another Viking feature win. With Johnson on the point, Crouse moved around Erdman into the second spot. Back in traffic, Justin Tammen was the car on the move. Tammen, who was put to the rear of the field for an early race incident, moved back into the top five with only a few laps left. Johnson would go on to win, Crouse was second, Erdman third, Blom fourth, and Tammen fifth.

Josh Muzik and Brandon Dolman lead eighteen Villard Implement WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds to the green. At the drop of the green, it was Muzik who got to the lead and he was quickly joined by Dalton, MN veteran Ron Saurer in a battle for the lead. Saurer, who was working the high side of the track, moved past Muzik into the lead. A caution with nine to go for an incident which left Jamie Thorstad on the back chute and McKenzie Gerdes with a flat tire slowed the field with Saurer leading Muzik and Corey Stork. Thorstad would retire to the pits with damage, while Gerdes’s crew made a tire change and she tagged the end of the field. With the green back out, Saurer and Muzik locked horns once more in a great battle. Saurer continued to work the shelf, while Muzik was in the ditch. Lap after lap the duo held their lines and swapped the lead several times, with Stock lurking in the shadows of the leaders. With the white flag out, the duo crossed the line side by side and continued to be side by side down the back chute. As the leaders exited turn four they were still side, setting up a drag race to the finish. Muzik pulled ahead by inches to claim his first win of 2017, Saurer was second, Storck third, Matt Thoennes fourth, and track point leader Shawn Olson rounded out the top five.

In the Cenex of Alexandria Pure Stocks, Tanner Horn used a front row starting spot to claim his first career win. Horn held of a late race challenge from track point leader Craig Gardner, in a race which featured some hard racing and hard wrecks. Dustin Karl raced from tenth to finish third, Abby Hacker was fourth, and Tyler Kunz moved from ninth to finish fifth.

Next week the track will host the Advantage RV Mod Tour, featuring the 3rd Annual Race for Fallen Lineman Modified Special. The race is set to pay $2500 to the winner, with all regular classes in action. The pits open at 4 with grandstands at 5 and racing action starting at 6:45.
